Former Michigan QB Tom Brady, Patriots, back in Super Bowl

It wasn't pretty today, but the New England Patriots are back in another Super Bowl, the 5th time since former Michigan QB Tom Brady took over as the starting QB for the Patriots 10 years ago.

Brady wasn't good today, telling Jim Nantz of CBS  in the AFC Championship Trophy ceremony, "...I sucked."

Brady's 1 yard TD run with 11:29 left in the 4th QTR was the eventual game winning score.

The Ravens drove down the field in the final minuets, only to have a game winning TD pass dropped and a game tying FG missed with seconds left in the game.

Brady becomes just the second ever NFL QB to start 5 Super Bowls, joining former Denver Broncos QB John Elway, who was 2-3 in his 5 starts.

Tom Brady continues to set NFL records

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady's NFL playoff record 6 TD passes vs. Denver Broncos, 1/14/12.

Yes, I'm biased, but I have said for the past 6 years, or so, that Tom Brady is the best QB in the NFL.
12 years in the NFL and Brady continues to re-write the NFL record book.

When he retires in 5+ years Brady's name will be at or near the top of every major NFL record for QB play.

Michigan Men in NFL playoffs

Having been a long suffering fan of the Detroit Lions I've always tried to root for Michigan Football players to win Super Bowls.

Last year former Wolverine and 1997 Heisman Trophy winner Charles Woodson won his first SB as a member of the Green Bay Packers.

Also on the 2011 Packers was former Michigan defensive lineman Mike Trgovac, who's a defensive assistant.
This year's playoffs start today with the New Orleans Saints at the San Fransisco Giants.

The Saints Michigan player representative is former Wolverine wide receiver Adrian Arrington (2004-07).

On the Saints coaching staff is former Michigan assistant coach Terry Malone, who was on the staff of Lloyd Carr at Michigan.

In 2009, Jonathon Goodwin (1999-2001), who is the starting center of the 49ers, won a SB playing for the Saints.

As all Michigan fans know, the Head Football Coach of the 49ers is former UM All-American QB Jim Harbaugh (1983-86).

The night  game is the Denver Broncos at the New England Patriots.

There are no former Michigan Men on the Broncos roster, so we'll get right to the Patriots.
The Patriots are led on the field by Michigan's most successful NFL QB ever, Tom Brady (1997-99).

Brady is in his 12th season in the NFL, all with the Pats, and led New England to Super Bowl wins in 2001, 03-04.

The punter for the Patriots is one of the best ever to punt for Michigan, Zoltan Mesko (2005-09)..

Also on the Patriots squad is Brady's back-up, former Wolverine QB Ryan Mallett (2007), who transferred after his freshman year, to Arkansas.

Tomorrow's early game is the Houston Texans at the Baltimore Ravens, followed by the New York Giants visiting the Green Bay Packers.

For Houston, former Wolverine defensive lineman Tim Jamison (2005-08) is a big reason the the Texans have the #1 defense in the NFL.

No former Wolverines players are on the roster for the Ravens.

Former linebacker Andy Moeller is the Ravens assistant offensive line coach, and former Wolverine assistant Cam Cameron is the Ravens Offensive Coordinator.

As mentioned earlier the Packers Charles Woodson and coach Mike Trgovac will be looking for another Super Bowl ring to add to the one they already have from last year.

The New York Giants are represented by former Michigan wide receiver Mario Manningham (2005-07) and center David Baas (2000-04).

Former Wolverines Jim Hermann, Michigan's Defensive Coordinator for the 1997 National Champions, and Gerald Ingram, the former Wolverine fullback, are coaches on the Giants staff.

So, as long as the Broncos and the Ravens don't make the Super Bowl, another former Wolverine player will win a Super Bowl ring.
